# Draft and rewrite with AI in PlexiiDocs

> Have AI draft new text at your cursor or rewrite a passage you select, preview the result, then insert it, replace the selection or try again.

PlexiiDocs can write with you. Describe a section and AI drafts it at your cursor, with headings, lists, tables and formatting where they help. Select a passage and AI rewrites it: tighter, more formal, as a list, or however you describe. You always see a preview first, and nothing changes in your document until you click to add it.

## Before you start

- **Plans.** AI writing is on every plan.
- **AI needs to be set up:** PlexiDesk credits while you are signed in, or your own Anthropic key. See [AI credits and where your AI runs](https://plexiidesk.com/help/ai-credits).

## Draft new text

1. Click where the new text should go.
2. Click **Ask AI** at the right end of the toolbar. The **Draft with AI** panel opens above the page.
3. Describe what to write, for example "a risks section with a table of five risks, their likelihood and an owner".
4. Click **Draft**, or press `⌘` `Enter` on a Mac (`Ctrl` `Enter` on Windows). The button reads **Drafting…** while AI writes.
5. Read the **Preview**.
6. Click **Insert** to add it at your cursor, or **Regenerate** for another version.

## Rewrite a passage

1. Select the text you want to change. A small bar appears below it.
2. Click **AI** on the bar (**Rewrite with AI**). The **Rewrite selection** panel opens above the page.
3. Click one of the quick choices:
   - **Improve writing**
   - **Make it more concise**
   - **Fix spelling and grammar**
   - **Make the tone more formal**
   - **Turn this into a bulleted list**
   - **Turn this into a table**

   Or describe the change in **Or describe how to change the selection…** and click **Rewrite**.
4. Read the **Preview**.
5. Click **Replace selection** to swap it in, or **Regenerate** for another version.

If no text is selected, the panel asks you to select some text first.

## From the keyboard

Press `⌘` `K` on a Mac (`Ctrl` `K` on Windows) in a document and choose **Draft with AI** or **Rewrite selection with AI**. See [The command palette](https://plexiidesk.com/help/command-palette).

## Close the panel

Click the **×** at the top right of the panel. Anything not inserted is discarded.

## Write better prompts

- **Say what it is for.** "An intro for a funding proposal to a city council" gets a more useful draft than "an intro".
- **Ask for the shape you want.** Tables, bulleted lists, headings and numbered steps all come through as real formatting.
- **Give the facts.** AI does not know your figures or names unless you put them in the prompt. Check every fact in the preview before you insert it.
- **Rewrite in passes.** Make it concise first, then fix the tone, rather than asking for everything at once.

## Ask Plexii about the document

## Common questions

**The panel says no API key is set.**
AI is not set up yet. Sign in to use PlexiDesk credits, or add your own Anthropic key. See [AI settings](https://plexiidesk.com/help/settings-ai).

**I inserted a draft and want it gone.**
Press `⌘` `Z` on a Mac or `Ctrl` `Z` on Windows.

**Does AI see my whole document?**
**Draft** works from what you type in the panel. **Rewrite** works on the text you selected.

**Does this work in a Document widget on a desk?**
Yes. The widget has the same **Ask AI** button and selection bar. See [Document widget](https://plexiidesk.com/help/widget-document).
