PlexiiOffice reads the files other people send you, and saves your work in the formats they use. A Word file becomes a PlexiDocs document, an Excel or CSV file becomes a spreadsheet, a PowerPoint file becomes a deck and a Visio file becomes a diagram. When you are done, save a copy back out as a Word, Excel, PowerPoint or PDF file.

Importing makes a PlexiiOffice file from the original. The file on your computer is not changed, and later edits in PlexiiOffice do not change it either.

## Before you start

- **Plans.** Importing and exporting work on every plan.
- **File types you can bring in:** Word .docx, Excel .xlsx and .xls, .csv, PowerPoint .pptx and Visio .vsdx. Older Word .doc files need to be saved as .docx first.

## At a glance

| From | Import | Export |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Word** | .docx into PlexiDocs | .docx, and also PDF and web page (.html) |
| **Excel** | .xlsx, .xls or .csv into PlexiSheets | .xlsx or .csv |
| **PowerPoint** | .pptx into PlexiSlides | .pptx, and also PDF |
| **Visio** | .vsdx into PlexiDiagrams | PNG, SVG, JPG or PDF |

PlexiDesign and PlexiDraw save as images and PDF. See [Export to PDF and print](https://plexiidesk.com/help/office-pdf-export-and-print).

## Bring in a file as a new Office file

The quickest way to turn a file into a new Office file:

- **Word, Excel or PowerPoint:** on a desk, click **Add widget**, choose **Document**, **Spreadsheet** or **Slides**, then **Import a file**. The new file is named after the one you chose and is kept in Office as well as on the desk. See [Document widget](https://plexiidesk.com/help/widget-document), [Spreadsheet widget](https://plexiidesk.com/help/widget-spreadsheet) and [Slides widget](https://plexiidesk.com/help/widget-slides).
- **Visio:** on the Documents page, click **Import Visio** and choose a .vsdx file. The diagram opens in PlexiDiagrams. See [The Documents page](https://plexiidesk.com/help/office-documents-page).

## Bring a file into an open file

Each editor can also import into the file you have open. The result differs by app:

- **PlexiDocs:** click the folder button near the right end of the toolbar (**Open or export Office files**) and choose **Import Word (.docx)**. The Word file's contents are added where your cursor is, and the document takes the Word file's paper size, orientation, margins, header and footer. See [Word, PDF and web export in PlexiiDocs](https://plexiidesk.com/help/docs-word-import-export).
- **PlexiSheets:** choose **File** > **Import (.xlsx / .csv)**. The file **replaces** what is in the spreadsheet; **Undo** brings the previous contents back. See [Import and export Excel and CSV files](https://plexiidesk.com/help/sheets-excel-csv-import-export).
- **PlexiSlides:** choose **File** > **Import (.pptx)**. The deck **replaces** the slides you had; undo brings them back. See [Import and export PowerPoint and PDF](https://plexiidesk.com/help/slides-powerpoint-import-export).

A line above the file says when the import is done.

> **Tip:**
> Office formats and PlexiiOffice lay things out in slightly different ways. After importing, look over headings, spacing and fonts before you share the file. A PowerPoint import brings across the text and basic layout of each slide.

## Save a copy in another format

1. Open the file.
2. Choose the export:
   - **PlexiDocs:** **File** > **Download** > **Microsoft Word (.docx)**, **PDF document (.pdf)** or **Web page (.html)**.
   - **PlexiSheets:** **File** > **Download** > **Microsoft Excel (.xlsx)** or **Comma-separated values (.csv)**.
   - **PlexiSlides:** **File** > **Download** > **PowerPoint (.pptx)** or **PDF document (.pdf)**.
   - **PlexiDiagrams:** **Export** in the diagram's toolbar, then **PNG image**, **SVG (vector)**, **JPG image** or **PDF**.
3. Choose where to save the file. It is named after your file to start with.
4. Click **Save**.

After a Word, Excel or PDF export, a line above the file shows where it was saved.

> **Note:**
> A .csv file holds one sheet: the tab you are on, as values. To keep every tab, the formatting and the formulas, export to .xlsx.

## Common questions

**I dropped a Word file onto a desk and it did not open in PlexiDocs.**
A file dropped onto a desk becomes a File or link widget that opens it in your computer's own app. To edit it in PlexiiOffice, add a Document widget and choose **Import a file**. See [Drop files, links and apps onto a desk](https://plexiidesk.com/help/canvas-drop-files).

**Can I turn a CSV or Excel file into a Table widget instead?**
Yes. On a desk, use **Import file** to make a Table from it. See [Turn a file into a widget](https://plexiidesk.com/help/desk-import-file).

**I imported into the wrong spreadsheet.**
Click **Undo** straight away to bring the previous contents back.
