# Version history

> PlexiiOffice keeps earlier versions of every file as you work. Open Version history to go back to one; restoring saves the current state first.

As you work on a file, PlexiiOffice quietly keeps versions of it. If an edit goes wrong, or you want something back that you deleted an hour ago, open **Version history** and restore the version from before the change.

It works the same way in all six apps: PlexiDocs, PlexiSheets, PlexiSlides, PlexiDiagrams, PlexiDesign and PlexiDraw.

## Before you start

- **Plans.** Version history is on every plan.
- **Versions build up as you edit.** A file you have not changed yet has no versions.

## How versions are kept

- When you change a file, a version is saved. While you keep editing, a new version is saved at most once every five minutes.
- A version is only kept when something has changed, so leaving a file open does not fill the list.
- Each file keeps its fifty most recent versions. Older ones are removed as new ones are added.

Version history is about the file's contents. Its name is not part of a version, so restoring does not change the file's name.

## Restore an earlier version

1. Open the file.
2. Choose **File** > **Version history**. The **Version history** panel opens on the right.
3. Find the version you want. Each one shows when it was saved: **Today** and the time for today's versions, or the date and time for earlier ones. The top one is marked **newest**.
4. Click **Restore** beside it.

The file reloads with that version's contents. The panel stays open.

> **Note:**
> Restoring is safe. Before it changes anything, PlexiDesk saves the file as it is now, labelled **Before restore**, at the top of the list. If the version you restored was not the one you wanted, restore **Before restore** to get back to where you started.

Some versions carry a label that says where they came from. **AI edit** marks a change Plexii made to the file for you.

To close the panel, click the **×** at its top right, or click outside it.

## What you will see

- **Loading versions…** while the list loads.
- **No versions yet.** when there is nothing to restore. Keep working and versions appear every few minutes.
- **Restoring…** on the button while a version is being restored.

## Version history or undo?

- For a change you made a moment ago, **Undo** is quicker. See [Undo and redo](https://plexiidesk.com/help/undo-redo).
- For anything older, or after you have closed and reopened the file, use **Version history**.
- To let someone else propose changes you can accept or reject, use suggesting mode in PlexiDocs. See [Suggest edits with track changes](https://plexiidesk.com/help/docs-track-changes).

## Common questions

**Can I see what a version looks like before I restore it?**
The list shows when each version was saved. Restore one to see it; if it is not the right one, restore **Before restore** to go back.

**Does restoring a version change the file on my desks?**
Yes. A widget on a desk shows the same file, so it shows the restored contents too.

**Can I get back a file I deleted?**
Version history works inside a file you can open. For a deleted file, look in the trash. See [Delete and restore Office files](https://plexiidesk.com/help/office-trash-and-restore).
