Plexii glossary

Flow (flow state)

A state of absorbed attention often associated with clear goals, immediate feedback and a workable challenge.

What it means

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s concept ; the conditions often described (clear goals, immediate feedback, a balance of challenge and skill); flow and hyperfocus distinguished neutrally with no clinical claims; what you can control (interruptions, the size of the next step).

The term is most useful as a shared description. It does not remove the need to look at the actual task, evidence or constraint in front of you.

A practical example

A developer has one clear bug, immediate test feedback and an uninterrupted block whose difficulty matches their skill.

Put it into practice

  1. Name the concrete situation before applying the label. Flow (flow state) is useful only when it changes a choice, boundary or next action.
  2. Make the state visible: write the owner, time, source or stopping condition down instead of relying on memory.
  3. Review what happened. Keep the part that reduced ambiguity and change the part that added ceremony without helping the work.
