Task paralysis (task initiation)
The experience of wanting to act but struggling to begin, choose or move to the next step.
What it means
Everyday description of wanting to start and not being able to, and the name of the underlying skill, task initiation (searchers ask ‘what is task initiation in executive functioning’) — no clinical claims. Practical ways in that
The term is most useful as a shared description. It does not remove the need to look at the actual task, evidence or constraint in front of you.
A practical example
“Prepare the report” feels too broad to start; “open last month’s report and copy its headings” is concrete enough to begin.
Put it into practice
- Name the concrete situation before applying the label. Task paralysis (task initiation) is useful only when it changes a choice, boundary or next action.
- Make the state visible: write the owner, time, source or stopping condition down instead of relying on memory.
- Review what happened. Keep the part that reduced ambiguity and change the part that added ceremony without helping the work.
