AI hallucination

An AI-generated statement that sounds plausible but is false, unsupported or inconsistent with the available source material.

What it means

Neutral definition: a language model stating something false or unsupported with confidence; why it happens in plain terms (it predicts likely text rather than looking facts up). a university library guide). How to check an answer — sources, quotes, numbers — with a link to check ai answers rather than repeating it.

The term is most useful as a shared description. It does not remove the need to look at the actual task, evidence or constraint in front of you.

A practical example

An answer supplies a convincing publication title that does not exist. Checking the citation before using it catches the error.

Put it into practice

  1. Name the concrete situation before applying the label. AI hallucination is useful only when it changes a choice, boundary or next action.
  2. Make the state visible: write the owner, time, source or stopping condition down instead of relying on memory.
  3. Review what happened. Keep the part that reduced ambiguity and change the part that added ceremony without helping the work.
