Kanban board

A visual workflow in which cards move through named stages and work in progress can be limited.

What it means

Lanes for stages, cards for work, and limits on work in progress, illustrated with a clearly fictional example; where it came from . Kanban vs a to-do list vs a Gantt chart.

The term is most useful as a shared description. It does not remove the need to look at the actual task, evidence or constraint in front of you.

A practical example

A post moves from Idea to Drafting to Review to Scheduled, while a limit prevents ten drafts from starting together.

Put it into practice

  1. Name the concrete situation before applying the label. Kanban board is useful only when it changes a choice, boundary or next action.
  2. Make the state visible: write the owner, time, source or stopping condition down instead of relying on memory.
  3. Review what happened. Keep the part that reduced ambiguity and change the part that added ceremony without helping the work.

How it relates to Plexii

a Table’s Kanban view turns a Single select column into lanes, with an Unassigned lane first (table views).
