Add files and folders
Bring files into PlexiDesk's Files: pick them, drag them in, import a whole folder from your computer, make new folders, and add Office documents.
There are four ways to get things into Files: pick files, drag them in, import a whole folder from your computer, or file an Office document you already have. Whichever you use, PlexiDesk keeps its own copy, so the originals on your computer stay exactly as they are.
Before you start
- Adding files is on every plan.
- Open Files and go to the folder you want the files in. See Files: your folders and files.
Add files
- Click Add files in the toolbar.
- In the Add files window, choose one or more files and open them.
The files are copied into the folder you are in. You can add files of any kind.
Drag files in
Drag files from your computer onto the Files window. A coloured outline shows where they will go, and they are copied into the folder you are in.
To put them straight into a folder you can see, drop them onto that folder.
Import a whole folder
- Click Import folder in the toolbar.
- In the Import a folder into your Drive window, choose a folder on your computer.
PlexiDesk copies the folder into the one you are in, under its own name, with its subfolders and files laid out the same way. Brain then takes in the new files, so you can find them when you search.
A few things are left out:
- Hidden files and folders, whose names start with a full stop.
- Folders used by developer tools, such as a project's downloaded packages.
- Any single file over 100 MB.
One import brings in at most 5,000 files.
Make a new folder
Click New folder in the toolbar. A folder called "New folder" appears in the folder you are in. Right-click it and choose Rename to name it. See Organise files and file documents.
Add an Office document
- Click Add document in the toolbar. The File an existing document here window lists your Office documents that are not yet in a folder.
- Click a document.
It now shows in this folder. Double-click it to open it in its editor. If every document is already in a folder, the window says so. To move a document that is already filed, see Organise files and file documents.
What happens to what you add
- It is a copy. Changing or deleting the original on your computer does not change the copy in Files.
- Large photos are made smaller. A large photo is stored at up to 2,560 pixels along its longest side, in the same format, when that makes the file smaller. This keeps your Drive quick to sync. GIF and SVG pictures, and smaller photos, are kept exactly as they are.
- Very large files stay on this computer. A file over 50 MB is kept on the computer you added it on and marked on this device only. Its name and type still show on your other computers.
Common questions
Can I undo adding files? For files you added with Add files or by dragging them in, yes: click Undo in the toolbar straight away. To take back an imported folder, right-click it and choose Delete folder and contents.
My imported folder is missing some files. They were hidden, over 100 MB, or in a developer tools folder, or the folder held more than 5,000 files. Add any you need with Add files.
Can I add a link instead of a file? Files holds files and folders. To keep a web link on a desk, drag it onto the desk or use the File or link widget. See File or link widget.
I need a photo at its full size. Keep the original on your computer. Files stores large photos at a size suited to working with them on desks and in documents.
