Install PlexiDesk on Windows
Download the Windows installer, choose who it is for and where it goes, then open PlexiDesk from its Desktop or Start menu shortcut.
PlexiDesk for Windows comes as a standard installer (an .exe file). It installs PlexiDesk for your own Windows account or for everyone who uses the PC, lets you choose the folder, and adds PlexiDesk shortcuts to your Desktop and Start menu.
Before you start
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 on a PC with an Intel or AMD (x64) processor.
- Windows on Arm. Windows 11 on Arm PCs, such as Snapdragon laptops, run the standard installer through Windows' built-in x64 emulation. Windows 10 on Arm is not supported.
- Administrator rights, only if you install for everyone. Installing just for yourself does not need them.
- Plans. PlexiDesk installs the same way on every plan.
If you use a Mac, see Install PlexiDesk on a Mac instead.
Download and install
- Go to the Download page and choose Download for Windows (.exe). On a Windows on Arm PC, choose Download for Windows on Arm (.exe).
- When the download finishes, open the installer from your Downloads folder. Its name starts with PlexiDesk.
- If SmartScreen appears, choose More info, then Run anyway.
- On Choose Installation Options, pick who PlexiDesk is for:
- Only for me (selected to begin with) installs it for your Windows account.
- Anyone who uses this computer (all users) installs it for every account on the PC. Windows asks for administrator permission when you choose Next.
- Choose Next.
- On Choose Install Location, keep the suggested folder or choose Browse... to pick another, then choose Install.
- When setup finishes, leave Run PlexiDesk ticked and choose Finish. PlexiDesk opens.
From now on, open PlexiDesk from the PlexiDesk shortcut on your Desktop or in the Start menu.
When PlexiDesk opens
Get started with PlexiDesk walks you through your first launch, from the first screen to your first desk.
Tips for using PlexiDesk on Windows
- The menu bar is tucked away. Press Alt to show it. It has File, Edit, View, Window and Help. Help is where you find Check for Updates... and Help & Support.
- Use Ctrl where Mac guides say ⌘. For example, View > Zoom In is Ctrl = on Windows and ⌘ = on a Mac. Help articles give both keys where they differ. See Keyboard shortcuts.
- Some SpeedDeck buttons are for Mac only. Buttons set to Keyboard shortcut, Type text, Media control or Set volume work on a Mac. Buttons that open a website work on Windows too. See SpeedDeck.
- Updates download themselves. When one is ready, an Install button appears in the footer. See Keep PlexiDesk up to date.
Common questions
Should I install for just me or for everyone?
Choose Only for me if you are the only person who uses PlexiDesk on this PC; it needs no administrator rights. Choose Anyone who uses this computer (all users) if several people sign in to this PC and each wants PlexiDesk.
How do I find out which version I have?
Look at the left end of the footer, the thin bar along the bottom of the window. It shows the version number and its date, for example v4.3.25. Clicking it checks for an update. See The footer.
Do I need to download PlexiDesk again for every new version?
No. Updates download by themselves while PlexiDesk is open, and you install them from the footer. See Keep PlexiDesk up to date. If you ever need to install a version by hand, download it from the Download page and run the installer.
How do I remove PlexiDesk?
Select Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find PlexiDesk, then select More > Uninstall. Removing the app does not remove your workspace from your PC, so if you install PlexiDesk again later, your desks are still there.
