Pinned conversation widget

Keep one chat or one person on your Home dashboard with its unread count, and open it in one click. Add one tile for each conversation you follow.

All plansUpdated

The Pinned conversation widget keeps one conversation on your Home dashboard. It shows who or what the conversation is, how many messages you have not read yet, and opens it with one click. You can pin a channel, a group or a direct message, and on the Team plan you can pin a person.

Use it for the conversations you check many times a day: the person you work with most, the channel for a project you are running, or a client group. You can add as many Pinned conversation widgets as you like, one for each conversation.

Before you start

  • The Pinned conversation widget is available on every plan.
  • You need to be signed in, because your conversations are kept in your PlexiDesk account.
  • You can pin a conversation you already have. To pin a new one, start it first. See Direct messages and channels Coming soon.
  • On the Team plan, you can also pin a person who is online now, even if you have never messaged them.
  • The widget works on your Home dashboard and also on Office Home, People Home and Brain Home. Each dashboard keeps its own widgets.

Add the Pinned conversation widget

  1. Open your Home dashboard. Click Home in the side menu, or click the Desk tab.
  2. Click Customize at the top right of the page. The widgets show an outline and the greeting fades back.
  3. Click Add widget. The widget gallery opens over the page.
  4. Click the Communication chip, or type pinned in Search widgets.
  5. Click Pinned conversation. A window opens that asks Pin who, or which chat?
  6. Click the conversation you want. Type in Search people and conversations… to find it by name.
    • Conversations lists your conversations, the most recent first.
    • On the Team plan, Online now lists people in your organisation who are online at the moment, with a green dot.
  7. Choose a size with the arrows either side of the preview, or with the dots under it. The size name shows underneath: Small or Medium. Small is chosen to start with.
  8. Click Add widget. The widget appears at the end of the board and glows for a moment so you can find it.
  9. Drag the widget to where you want it. The other widgets move aside to make room.
  10. Click Done.

To pin another conversation, repeat these steps. The Pinned conversation card in the gallery stays available however many you have added.

What the widget shows

  • Initials. A round badge with the initials of the conversation's name.
  • The name. A conversation's own title. A conversation without a title shows the names of the other people in it. A person you pinned shows their name.
  • A line under the name. At Small size it says how many messages are unread, for example 3 unread, or All caught up when you have read everything. At Medium size it shows the latest message instead, so you can read it without opening the chat.
  • The unread badge. A coloured badge on the right with the number of unread messages. Above 99 it shows 99+. When everything is read, the badge goes away.
  • A green dot. On the Team plan, a pinned person has a green dot on their initials while they are online.

If you pinned a person you have not messaged yet, the line under their name says Say hello.

Open the conversation

Click anywhere on the widget.

  • For a conversation, PlexiDesk marks it as read and takes you to your messages, where you can open it and reply.
  • For a person you already message, it opens your direct message with them in the same way.
  • For a person you have not messaged yet, it starts a direct message with them first, then takes you there.

For everything you can do in your messages, see PlexiiChat: channels and messages Coming soon.

Change, resize or remove the widget

Click Customize first. Each widget then shows small buttons on its top-right corner.

  • Pin a different conversation. Click the pencil button (its tooltip says Edit Pinned conversation). The Pin who, or which chat? window opens. Click the conversation or person you want instead.
  • Change the size. Click the size button. It shows the current size, SM or MD, and each click moves to the next one.
  • Move it. Drag the widget to a new place on the board.
  • Remove it. Click the × button (its tooltip says Remove Pinned conversation). This removes the widget only. The conversation and its messages are not changed.

Click Done when you have finished. For everything else you can do in this mode, see Customize your Home dashboard.

Good ways to use it

  • Your closest collaborators. Add one widget for each of the two or three people or channels you reply to most, and line them up down one side of the board.
  • A project channel next to its desk. Pin the channel for a project beside a Pinned desk widget for the same project, so the work and the conversation about it sit together.
  • Read without opening. Use Medium size for a channel where you mostly want to see the latest message.
  • Many people in one box. To keep several people or places one click away in a single widget, use a Shortcuts widget instead.
  • From a message to a meeting. Put a New meeting widget beside your pinned conversations, so starting or scheduling a meeting is one click away too.

Common questions

The window says "No conversations yet. Start one in Messages and pin it here." You do not have any conversations yet, or you are not signed in. Sign in, start a conversation (see Direct messages and channels Coming soon), then click Customize and Add widget again.

I cannot find a teammate in the list. People appear under Online now only on the Team plan, and only while they are online. Otherwise, start a direct message with them first. It then appears under Conversations, and you can pin it.

The widget says "This conversation is gone. Remove the widget or pin another." The conversation is no longer in your list of conversations. Click Customize, then the pencil button to pin a different one, or the × button to remove the widget.

My pinned teammate is offline. Does the widget stop working? No. The widget keeps the name you pinned, and clicking it still opens your conversation with them. Only the green dot depends on whether they are online.

Can I pin the same conversation on more than one dashboard? Yes. Home, Office Home, People Home and Brain Home each have their own widgets, so you can add a Pinned conversation widget to any of them.
