The open-items strip

The row of tabs above the footer for the desks, documents and apps you have open. Switch in one click, pin, close, and send a document to a desk.

All plansUpdated

Most of the time, PlexiDesk replaces one screen with the next as you move around. But a desk, the document you are writing from it and the chat where you discuss it are often one piece of work. The open-items strip keeps each of them one click away, as a row of tabs just above the footer.

The strip appears as soon as you open something, and stays hidden while there is nothing in it.

What gets a tab

A tab is added for each of these when you open it:

  • a desk
  • a room
  • a document, whether you opened it in Office or on its own
  • an app you open from the Office, People or Brain menu, such as Mail, Chat, the Browser or Sign

Places you go to rather than things you have open, such as Home, Trash or an area's home page, do not get a tab.

Each tab shows an icon and the item's name. Names stay up to date, so when you rename a desk its tab changes too. The tab for the screen you are on is highlighted.

Switch, pin and close

  • Switch to an item by clicking its tab. Opening something that already has a tab takes you to it without moving the tab, so your tabs stay where you expect them.
  • Close a tab by resting the pointer on it and clicking the ×. This only removes the tab from the strip. The desk, document or app is not closed or deleted.
  • Right-click a tab for its menu:
    • Pin — keep it here pins the tab. Pinned tabs show a pin, sit at the left of the strip and are never removed to make room. Choose Unpin to undo it.
    • Close the others removes every other tab, except tabs you have pinned.
    • Close all clears the whole strip, pinned tabs included.

The menu ends with a reminder: Closing only clears this strip.

How many tabs it keeps

The strip holds up to 12 tabs. When you open something new and the strip is full, the tab you looked at longest ago is removed to make room. Pinned tabs are never removed this way. If every tab is pinned, the strip grows past 12 rather than lose one. When there are more tabs than fit across the window, scroll the strip sideways.

Put a document on a desk

You can put a document on a desk straight from the strip, without opening the desk first. This works for PlexiiDocs, PlexiiSheets, PlexiiSlides, Diagrams, PlexiiDesign and PlexiiDraw documents.

The document goes on the desk as a widget that points to the same file, not a copy. Editing it on the desk and editing it in Office change the same document.

Drag it onto a desk's tab

  1. Make sure the desk you want has a tab in the strip. If it does not, open the desk once, then go back to the document.
  2. Drag the document's tab onto the desk's tab. The desk's tab is highlighted while the document is over it.
  3. Let go. A message confirms that the document was added to the desk, with an Open button to go there.

In Office, you can also drag a document from the list of files onto a desk's tab in the strip.

Use the tab's menu

  1. Right-click the document's tab.
  2. Under Send to desk, choose a desk. Every desk is listed, not only the ones with a tab.

If you do not have any desks yet, the menu says No desks to send it to yet.

When an item no longer exists

If a desk or document with a tab is deleted, the tab stays, with its name crossed out. Rest the pointer on it and the tooltip says it is no longer there. Click the × to remove the tab.

Your strip belongs to this computer

The strip is kept on this computer only and is not synced. Opening a desk on your laptop does not change the strip on your desktop. PlexiDesk remembers your tabs between launches.

Common questions

I cannot see the strip. It appears only when you have a desk, room, document or app open. Open one and the strip shows above the footer.

One of my tabs disappeared. When the strip is full, opening something new removes the tab you looked at longest ago. Pin the tabs you want to keep.

Does closing a tab delete anything? No. Closing a tab, Close the others and Close all only change the strip. Your desks, documents and apps are not affected.

Can I drag a desk's tab onto another desk? No. Only documents can be put on a desk from the strip.
